This is a matte painting task I wanted to get my hands on for some time now. Using the exact same picture, I turned a summer photo of a British Castle into a winterscape. Continue to see the animated video.
Reaching temperatures up to 20 ° Celsius (~ 70 ° Fahrenheit) these days its pretty warm in Germany by now – considering that last year we were covered in snow in March. So I decided to take a nice summer landscape and bring the winter back with the use of Photoshop and After Effects.
Having not as much time at hand as I wish I had, I decided to just alter the existing picture instead of adding whole new elements to the scene. Setting up the matte in Photoshop took a few hours, afterwards I added the snow effect in After Effects quickly. And, shame on me, there are some imperfections left. There still is some green peeping through on the castles walls, the trees in the back are way from perfect and the harsh shadows should have been blurred or even removed to fit the new weather. Besides that, I really enjoyed the transformation and will use the gained experience on a more detailed project I am planning to do.
